Hmong Cultural Customs Program
This 25 year old program at Hmong Cultural Center teaches adults and youth traditional orally recited songs and rituals associated with MeejKoob (the traditional Hmong Marriage Ceremony) and Kev PamTuag (Funeral Customs) in order to help ensure the survival of Hmong culture and traditions. The program is divided into two parts: The Marriage (Meej Koob) ceremony class and Funeral (Kav Xwm thiab TxivXaiv) ceremony classes. The classes are open to everyone and are designed to facilitate cultural learning by allowing students to discover and become immersed in the core canons of Hmong marriage and funeral customs
The Hmong Marriage (MeejKoob) Ceremony classes introduce students to traditional Hmong marriage customs. The lessons include oral song recitation, chants, ceremonial processions, and the expectations associated with ceremony participants of differential status including the bride/groom, elders, and others. The classes are conducted in Hmong.
The funeral customs classes function similarly to the marriage classes. These classes introduce students to traditional Hmong funeral customs. The lessons include orally recited songs, chants, funeral processions, and the general conduct that would be expected of funeral attendees of differential status including elders and younger people. This class is also conducted in Hmong.
