Hmong Cultural Center
Funeral Ceremony Class Photos
In the Winter and Spring of 2005, Tougeu Leepalao of the Hmong Cultural Center staff
taught the Hmong Funeral Ceremony rituals and songs to about 40 staff of the Saint Paul
Schools in a unique class at Hmong Cultural Center co-sponsored by the English Language
Learners department of the School District. While all of the Saint Paul School staff in the
class were Hmong-origin, they wanted to learn the Hmong funeral ceremony so that they
can more effectively work in a culturally sensitive and competent manner with Hmong
families who practice the traditional Hmong religion. In the Winter and Spring of 2004,
Tougeu Leepalao taught the Hmong marriage ceremony (Rules for the Mej Koob) in a
similar class with the Saint Paul Public Schools. Hmong Cultural Center is the only
organization or institution in the Minneapolis-St. Paul that teaches the Hmong marriage and
funeral ceremonies
